services: distance education students -- getting books and articles.

A variety of options are available to distance education students for obtaining library materials (books, journal articles, etc.). In some cases, resources may be available online. For those not available electronically, a request for books or photocopies of articles can be made with the materials being delivered to you.

Full-Text Online Retrieval of Journal Articles

The library subscribes to several electronic indexes and databases that contain the full text of journal articles. A full list of databases may found on the Find Articles in Databases page [http://library.unomaha.edu/researchtools/findarticles.php].

Most of the library's electronic resources are available only to registered UNO students, faculty, and staff. Please contact the Distance Education Coordinator or Circulation Desk if you have any questions about your library account.

Getting Materials from UNO Library

Distance education students should request UNO library materials using the InterLibrary Loan Request Form. Books and photocopies of articles will be sent out within two business days depending upon availability. UNO's Interlibrary Loan service handles the delivery of UNO library materials to distance students.

Books
Books will be sent to the student's address via UPS second day air. The Library will pay the cost for shipping the item to the requestor's home address, and the requestor will pay for the item to be returned to UNO Library. For more information on how long materials may be checked out, review the Library's Circulation Policies. In addition, books may be renewed electronically via the Library Catalog [http://catalog.lib.unomaha.edu/].

Articles
Photocopies of articles the Library makes and sends out will have a charge of $.10 per page, which will be billed to you. Articles will be sent via e-mail, fax, or first class mail as requested. Your e-mail must be MIME compatible, i.e. able to accept attachments. Rush fax service is available for an extra fee of $3.00 per article. Indicate if you want this option in the "comments" section of the request form.

Requestors can specify on a book or article request form that the title be acquired via interlibrary loan should the library not be able to provide it.

In-Person Check-Out from the Library
Distance education students are welcome to check out library materials in person at the UNO Library. A valid picture ID and barcode are required. You may want to consult the Library Catalog to ensure item availability.

The Electronic Reserves (E-Reserves or ERes) system is a convenient delivery mechanism for online courses and distance education courses, in particular. Instructors may place course materials on ERes to make them accessible online. For more information about placing items on ERes, see the Electronic Reserves Faculty Guidelines. For access to course materials available via E-Reserves, see http://eres.unomaha.edu/.

Getting Materials from Other Libraries

UNO Interlibrary Loan

UNO distance users can request that Interlibrary Loan borrow books and provide copies of articles not available full text in electronic indexes and databases and not owned by UNO Library. To request materials from other libraries, please fill out the InterLibrary Loan Request Form.

Materials borrowed from other libraries need to come to the University Library first before being sent on to a requestor, and extra time and expense for receipt and return of such items should be taken into consideration. In some cases delivery time can be as long as three weeks.

Books

As with the delivery of UNO Library materials, the Library will pay the costs for shipping the item from the lending library to UNO Library, and then from UNO Library to the requestor's home address via UPS second day air. The requestor will pay for the item to be returned to UNO Library.

Articles

Delivery methods for requested articles will be the same as outlined above in Materials Owned by UNO Library. Photocopying costs will vary depending upon lending library charges but usually will be $.25 per page. Rush fax service for article delivery is available for $3.00, plus whatever fax fee the lending library charges (none in the case of UNO, UNMC, or UNL-Law). Indicate your cost limit on the request form, and ILL will try to stay within it. If they can't, they will contact you. Be sure to provide your fax number, telephone number, and e-mail address.

Reciprocal Borrowing and Other Library Catalogs

The library has reciprocal borrowing agreements with other academic libraries in Nebraska. These programs allow UNO faculty, staff and students to check out materials from other cooperating libraries. For more information on reciprocal borrowing procedures and a listing of Nebraska libraries participating in this borrowing agreement, please see http://www.nebraskalibraries.org/cu/reciprocal/reciprocal.htm.

In addition, you may wish to check the catalogs of other libraries in the area for availability of items in their collections. The library Web site provides links to the catalogs of several Omaha-area and Nebraska libraries. Please see our pages at http://library.unomaha.edu/arealibraries.php.
