help: frequently asked questions -- interlibrary loan for faculty & staff.
What types of materials can be requested through interlibrary loan (ILL)?
Any type of library material can be requested through interlibrary loan (ILL), limited only by the availability of the material from outside sources.
How long does it take to receive requested materials?
That depends on where the material is acquired and the method of delivery. Most materials will take an average of two weeks. It is advisable to complete the "Not Needed After" section of the ILL request form. ILL staff will continue to try to locate and obtain the material until the date specified by the borrower.
What will it cost?
Faculty members do not pay interlibrary loan charges unless the materials requested are for personal non-academic work. For personal requests, the library charges only the amount charged by the lending library. Charges for materials vary widely and the ILL staff tries to obtain material as inexpensively as possible. Each request must include the maximum amount the person is willing to pay.
How do I make a request?
Requests can be submitted electronically via the UNO Library Web site or in writing at the Circulation Desk. ILL requests are not accepted over the phone. Requests will be returned unfilled if information is not complete or is unclear.
Where do I pick up and return requested materials?
When you are notified that the materials are available, you may pick them up at the library Circulation Desk. The materials will remain on hold until they are picked up or until the date due is reached. If there are charges, you are responsible for paying them whether or not the material is picked up. ILL materials are to be returned to the circulation desk; please do not return them to the outside book returns. The materials must be returned on or before the date due. Faculty and staff are not charged for overdue materials, but are responsible for damaged or lost materials.
Is electronic delivery of articles available?
Unless print delivery is specified on the initial request form, articles will be made available to you electronically. A notice that the article is available and information about how to access it will be sent to your email account. The articles can be viewed 3 times for up to 7 days.
Can the due dates on ILL materials be extended?
The lending institution controls the due date and potential renewals. Most libraries will extend due dates once for up to 4 additional weeks. Renewal requests must be made no later than 3 days prior the original due date. You will be notified of the new due date or if your request has been rejected. ILL materials cannot be renewed if the material states: No Renewals.
