Checking Out Materials
What do I need to check out a book?
One of the following:
- UNO ID card (must be registered for current semester)
- Current UNO faculty or staff ID card and photo ID
- Current UNO Alumni or UNO Library Friend ID card and photo ID
- Current ID card from a Nebraska college on the University Library Reciprocal Agreement list and photo ID
What if I change my address?
Notify both the Registrar's office and the Library Circulation Desk.
What if I forgot or lost my ID card?
- The Circulation Desk will hold your books until the following day while you obtain your ID card.
- If your UNO photo ID card is lost, you must contact the & Student I.D. Office in the Milo Bail Student Center for a replacement.
- No checkouts are allowed without a valid ID card.
How many books can I check out? For how long?
- 50 book limit for students, faculty and staff.
- 25 book limit for Alumni and Library Friends.
- 2 item limit for Reserve materials for all users.
- UNO, UNK, UNL, UNMC Graduate students - 8 week checkout
- UNO, UNK, UNL, UNMC Faculty - 16 week checkout
- All others - 4 week checkout.
Renewals, Returns, Fines
Can I renew my books?
- Two renewals if no holds or recalls have been placed on the item.
- To renew books online, go to the Library catalog and select "Renew Materials". Enter your name and the barcode from your id to access your library account and renew items.
- Overdue items may not be renewed on-line.
Where do I return my books or Reserve/Media items?
Books to the Circulation Desk,to the walk-by book drop at the Library main entrance or to the drive-through bookdrops on the south side of the Library.
Reserve and media items must be returned to the Circulation/Reserve Desk.
Books with CD-Roms and disks to the Circulation Desk. Do not return these items through a bookdrop.
How much are fines for late returns?
For books, documents, audios, kits and videos:
- $5.00 per item when the item is past the due date
- At 4 weeks overdue a $10.00 billing fee, and replacement cost for each item will be assessed to your Library account. The fine and billing fee will not exceed $15.00.
- When a billed item is returned, fines and billing fees must be paid before Library privileges can be restored or registration holds can be lifted.
- A $10.00 recall fine in addition to any other charges if the item is not returned by the due date on the Recall Letter.
Reserve items:
- Items with a 2 or 4 hour checkout are fined $1.00 per hour per item, not to exceed $5.00 per item.
- Items with 1, 3 or 7 day checkouts are fined $5.00 per item.
Material Types Available For Checkout
Can I check out a bound periodical, magazine or Reference book?
No. These are non-circulating items and must be used inside the Library or copied in the Library's copy center.
Can I check out Reserve items?
Yes. You need a valid ID. There is a 2 item limit. Some Reserve items are only checked out for 2 or 4 hours. Other Reserve items have 1, 3 or 7 day checkout periods.
Can I check out media items?
Compact disks, videos, audio cassettes and kits may be checked out for 7 days, 2 renewals, with a valid ID card. 3 item limit.
Can I check out newspapers?
Yes. You need a photo ID. Newspapers must be used inside the Library. They are located in the Reserve/Media area.
