Preserving the History and Culture of Afghanistan
Many titles in the Arthur Paul AfghanistanCollection are culturally and historically significant. Unfortunately, many are in poor physical condition and can not be used without causing additional damage to the book. The primary focus of digitization in the Afghanistan Collection is on preservation. When possible, these titles will be made available to scholars through the Library's digital repositories.
The preliminary selection process identified 10 titles for digitization. All of these were classified as fragile or damaged, requiring the use of special preservation techniques prior to digitizing and careful handling during the process. This initial list included only three books that were less than 100 years old while the majority were well over 150 years old. While the list is not yet finalized, the titles chosen accurately portray the type of books that will be digitized.
