WORKING JOB TITLE : Coordinator, Library Instruction

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR : Director of Public Services

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY : Reporting to the Director of Public Services, the Library Instruction Coordinator is responsible for the Information Literacy Instruction Services program. The Library Instruction Coordinator provides leadership and direction to plan, implement, and evaluate the information literacy instruction program to the accomplish the teaching and learning goals of the Library and the University. The position serves as library liaison for the Information Literacy intensive programs of First Year Writing Program (English 1160) and Speech Instruction. The position supervises and collaborates with the Technology and Instructional Design Specialist to develop applications of technology to support the instructional programs, both personally and virtually, in addition to working collegially and collaboratively with subject specialist reference librarians to provide upper-division instruction and achieve information literacy objectives.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Instruction Services:
    • Provides the leadership, direction, planning, and assessment for a creative and effective information literacy library instruction.
    • Serves as lead information literacy instructor.
    • Maintains close liaison relationship with First Year Writing Program and Public Speaking/Speech Center faculty.
    • Designs effective assessments of student learning and instruction delivery, using the data to guide teaching and professional development.
    • Coordinates publications related in instruction, including classroom handouts and informational/marketing materials.
    • Observes and assesses instruction sessions of subject specialist librarians. Develops and implements peer assessment models for all instruction faculty and associates.
  2. Virtual Services:
    • Administers web content related to the instruction program.
    • Leads and/or participates in the design, development, maintenance, and evaluation of web-deliverable interactive learning objects, instructional modules, streaming audio/video, and other online instructional materials for via the library's website and the University's Blackboard course management systems.
  3. Supervisory and Leadership:
    • Supervises the Technology and Instructional Design Specialist.
    • Represents the instructional unit in library and strategic planning processes.
    • Provides leadership, mentoring, training, observation and evaluation of library associates providing information literacy instruction.
    • Identifies, encourages, and supports training for library faculty and staff in teaching methodologies and educational technology.
  4. Other Responsibilities:
    • Participates in reference and service desk service.
    • Develops and maintains current knowledge of advances in instruction, technology, reference, and other areas related to this position by reading professional literature, subscribing to appropriate list servs, and regularly participating in professional development activities. Applies knowledge in continuously improving and advancing instructional and leadership skills.
    • Participates in department and library planning
    • Develops and documents processes and procedures; periodically reviews and revises processes and procedures as needed.
    • Accepts and implements other duties as assigned.
  5. Faculty Responsibilities:
    • Serves on library and/or university committees.
    • Participates in cross-departmental projects within the library.
    • Participates in professional activities, professional development and scholarly research and publication activities as outlined in the "Guidelines on Appointment, Reappointment, Promotion, and Tenure Recommendations for Faculty Members of the University Library."

FACULTY RANK: Professional librarians have academic status and faculty rank and are subject to library and university guidelines and criteria for reappointment, promotion and tenure.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT: Twelve months, full-time, Academic-Administrative with faculty rank. Salary and rank are dependent upon qualifications.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required : ALA accredited M.L.S. Experience in delivery of library instruction in classroom and virtual environments. Knowledge of instructional design principles and practices reflected in instructional products and materials; information literacy standards, concepts and issues, and their connections with teaching and learning issues in higher education; expertise in learning theories and instructional methodologies; familiarity with concepts, techniques and tools related to Web-based instruction and/or e-learning (e.g., course management systems, streaming video, learning objects and/or simulations). Ability to develop interactive learning environments and experience with project management. Excellent interpersonal, presentation and communications skills, both verbal and written. Demonstrated ability to establish goals, set reasonable time frames for accomplishing tasks, and effectively meet deadlines. Ability to interact effectively with all levels of students, staff and faculty. Must be flexible and capable of working successfully individually as well as in teams in a changing library environment.

Desired : Progressively responsible experience in an academic or research library in library instruction. Experience in developing, coordinating, and assessing library instruction programs.
