UNO Library Friends hosts First Book Discussion
The UNO Library Friends sponsor a series of book discussions throughout the year. The first event, scheduled for Friday, October 12th, at 12:00 pm, is a discussion of Paul Schneider’s book, “Brutal Journey.”
“This book tells the story of an army of would-be conquerors who came to
the New World on the heels of Cortés. Bound for glory, they landed in Florida in 1528. But only four of the four hundred would survive: eight years and a 5,000-mile journey later, three Spaniards and a black Moroccan wandered out of the wilderness to the north of the Rio Grande and into Mexico. The survivors brought nothing back other than their story, but what a tale it was. Now, by combining the accounts of the explorers with findings of archaeologists and academic historians, Schneider offers an authentic narrative to replace a legend of North American exploration.”
(From the Publisher’s Description)
Professor Beth Ritter, Director of Native American Studies at UNO, will lead the discussion about this grand story of the epic first crossing of North America.
The event will be held in the MBSC Council Room and is free to the public. Feel free to bring your lunch! Questions should be directed to John Flocken, 4-3725.
September 17, 7:00 p.m.: Constitution Day Celebration
Celebrate Constitution Day at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) Criss Library on Monday, Sept. 17, when Carson Holloway, assistant professor of political science at UNO, presents "Executive Privilege and the Constitution." The 7 p.m. event is free and open to the public.
"We're honored to have Dr. Holloway speak to us on this timely topic," said Jim Shaw, government documents librarian. "Consitution Day gives us a great opportunity to examine meaningful political issues and hold great discussions relevant today."
During 2005 – 2006, Holloway was a William E. Simon Visiting Fellow in Religion and Public Life in Princeton University's James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions. His books include All Shook Up: Music, Passion, and Politics and The Right Darwin? Evolution, Religion, and the Future of Democracy. He is currently at work on a book on the thought of John Paul II and modern political philosophy, which will be published by Baylor University Press.
